Cartridge Recommendations For Thorens TD 124

Postby Djohn » 14 Jun 2004 03:26

Any TD 124 owners on the list that can give me some recommendations for a Cartridge to use on this TT. I understand the Cast Iron platter problem where you cannot use a Moving Coil.

Thanks in advance,

I had no issues using various MC cartridges on my former 124 mk2. :?

Maybe someone else can throw some light on this one.

friend of mine was using a Denon 110 on a Mk 1 (which, I gather, all had iron platters). He didn't seem to have any problems, either setting the weight, using the built-in balance of the TecnoArm, or seperating the needle from the lp after playing ;-)

Cartridge Recommendations For Thorens TD 124

The original 124 has a cast-iron platter while the 124 II started with the cast-iron platter and quickly went to a cast-aluminum platter. This latter platter is preferable for use with moving-coil cartridges which have powerful magnets.

I used an Ortofon SPU-G-T-E with the Thorens TD121 (single 33.3rpm speed version of the TD124) and had no problems with it's iron platter.
This SPU had a built in step-up transformer and an elliptical stylus, so that may have had an influence. It sounded good for the period though(early-mid 1960s).
