Sorry for resurrecting such an old topic, but I didn't want to make a new one as this subject has been discussed already few times.
I acquired a working SL-5, and it has the stock cartridge. The seller vaguely remembered that he had replaced the stylus many years ago and it has been unused since then.. yeah right!
Actually the stylus doesn't sound worn, but rather "characteristic" to a cheap elliptical (sibilance, difficulties to track loud/dynamic passages), so I'm of course looking for an upgrade.
Availability of P-Mount here is rather small, so my current options are;
1. Ortofon X1-MCP - I've heard some good, but also a lot of bad comments about this one, and given only 2mv output, I'm suspicious since my current phono stage is integrated and doesn't include gain adjustment. Still I'm extremely interested in this cartridge.. I mean it's blue and all
Is the stylus nude btw? The manual has the "nude" word removed from the p-mount specifications for whatever reason. Seems weird they would just bond the stylus to the p-mount version.
2. Ortofon OMP10+20 stylus - the OM30 is really expensive here, so I'll just forget that right away. 10 body and 20 stylus could be just about affordable (still much more expensive than X1-MCP), but is the 20 stylus enough to rid me of most sibilance?
3. Shure M92E. Cheap options are always welcome. This is later upgradable with a SAS stylus I believe, but I'm not sure if SAS has the correct tracking angle/distance for p-mount. Another cheap elliptical, but I've heard this cartridge is not that sibilant. True?
4. Be patient and order Jico SAS/Shibata abroad. This is probably the best option, I know.. but I hate to wait for possibly 3-4 weeks and pay a decent chunk to customs..
What do you guys recommend? Option 4 is the least desirable for me, as I have a bit of impatient personality.
