Cool looking deck. I've no idea what it is but I'm sure someone will chip in 8-[

You are quite correct in that it is a Collaro deck.

The Pye is a small radiogram. I can remember having one of these and replacing the complete arm with a later, but cream coloured, Collaro arm which made fitting a different cartridge easier.

Put up a picture of the idler with dimensions, I may be able to help.

Hi Alan

I have found some pictures and I have taken one of mine without the idler present.

This might make some sense to you, it seems that the deck is unique for this radiogram as you point out.

Th bakerlite on this is in really good order, I know it wont ever be particularly desireable but I would love to sort it out and use it, as we all know the attic is the downfall of all record players.

Thanks for your reply Alan, have you still got the Pye?, I may be able to botch it if I knew the measurements.

Is the idler missing?

can you measure the shaft that it runs on and the od of the idler if you have it. I certainly have an idler for a later Collaro, where the idler moves up/down to run on a stepped motor pulley. The shaft for that is 0.155" dia and the OD approx 2.5". The design that you have is similar to that also used by HMV in some of their decks of the time, it results in a very slim platter but has the added complication of the additional small idlers.

The one that I had was sold at least 10 years ago, is yours a recent purchase?

Hi Alan

The idler fitted was wrong and I have tried to modify it and ended up stripping the rubber as it was perished but it bore no resemblance to the idler in the picture, and didn’t reach the inside rim.

You say you have an idler that may fit, is it for sale I expect its quite expensive so if it didn’t fit would I be able to return it? Or perhaps you can point me in another direction.

I have stripped out the cabinet and cleaning the leather paper covering at the moment, but I have fallen in love with it over the weekend.

Not sure on measurements and terminology sorry but I'm prepared to have a go.

Thank you for your advice Alan

Where are you?, send a PM.

I saw one of these for sale only last week, if it is now yours, you might not be far away.

Pure coincidence, I'm a long way from you.

I suppose that you have checked that the electronics work and that you get some output from the cartridge, I do remember that on the one that I had there were 2 heads, one for 33/45 and the other for 78. both in my case were useless hence the change of the Collaro arm to enable a later turnover cartridge to be fitted.

You really need to find more detail on the idler, try the vintage radio forum (http://www.vintage-radio.net), I'm sure that you will find your answers there. With more dimensions, I may be able to find one.

Radio is fine on MW & LW Gram works, have put a disc on spun the platter and it plays well but gets a bit tiresome on the finger.

Aside from the idler its a very well looked after gram, I'm determined to sort it and I will let you and the viewers know how I get on, there is one on ebay at the moment with the same problem, it might help someone else.

Anyway back to the polishing, I figured what OD was too - Outside Diameter, I'm on a learning curve.

Thank you for your time Alan, if theres any more advice you may have I would really appreciate it. :D

Give Ed Crockett a shout, you should be able google him. I sent my Colarro idler wheel to him and he turned it around in a week for $25. He made a superb job of it to. He may be able identify the correct idler wheel for yours if you suspect its the wrong one.

Yo spareflyer:

Ypu are going to have to disassemble this unit to find a model number.

This thing has to have a number on it somewhere and I suspect that the number is located on the bottom of the deck. I would lift the whole deck out of the radiogram by backing the out the screws that hold it to the case. Then you should see some numbers, etc on bottom. You may then be able to discern the Collaro part number. Also, there may be a number on the deck in the area underneath the turntable. You should find model or part number number under turntable or if not there, under the deck after you lift it out of case. You may also have to take the knobs off and undo the washers and screw rings that hold the controls in place, but it may lift out with tuner and amp still attached.

And good luck from the old disassember,

Joe Z.
