Help with a Technics sl-1200 mk1

Postby Wolfman Jess » 20 Aug 2012 22:07

So I was cleaning out my storage building and came across an old stereo system, and one of my friends started to flip out telling me it was really nice. It was basically never used and a client gave it to me years ago and I forgot about it. I have a technics SL-1200 mk1 serial number is 007065, a technics receiver that is sa-5760. The cartridge says Pickering XUV, and the top of it reads D4500-0

Everything is in near mint condition, and I was wondering if I should list it on my homeowners, and how much to list it for. Also I am wondering if this is a bit to much for a novice to start with and tips on breaking it in, or something I should trade it for that is a little more accessible. Thanks in advance for you guys dropping some knowledge on me.

sl1200 mk1 is a great turntable. You should not get trouble to sell it. It is a better sounding turntable than the mark 2 .(and yes I own both)

Cool, I am least going to keep it for awhile. If it is worth more than a grand I need to put it on my insurance? Does anyone know the approximate replacement value for the setup?

It sure can go loud I will give it that much. I wish I had some better speakers but even just playing around a few hours ago it was loud enough to shake walls at 25% volume when listening to 45:33.

One more thing, will this turntable sound good with a modern a receiver? Or would I do better to keep the two as a matched set?

Major score. Great turntable and possibly the best receiver Technics ever made. My good friend had one and he wishes he still had it.

Seem like Pickering was a commmon match for Technics back then?

You owe it to yourself to go out and buy some excellent speakers.

I am not sure I can invest any more in audio right now, I am a single dad with a 12 and 15 year old. Honestly, I may just end up selling it all if I can not put a great system together with it. I would rather see it enjoyed vs. sitting around in my garage.

Check your local craigslist for a good set of speakers, cheap. Then introduce your kids to vinyl, they're at the right age to get it. You have some great equipment there, even the cartridge is good. Alot of the used equipment I have been selling has been going to young people, shame to not give it a try.

Watch your kids with that receiver. At 165 watts RMS per side, it can blow your windows out!
Excellent tuner, too: 5 gang FM section. And variable loading in the phono section. That's class.

Cheers,
Alec

I understand. I was a single Dad and put three through college. My youngest is a Junior and doing well so I am almost there.

Most of my stereo gear sat in my basement for decades. I just resurrected it this past winter and restarted the vinyl hobby in February.

If you cannot fit this into your lifestyle then one option is to store it properly and get to it later. The TT will hold up fine.

I like the suggestion of finding good speakers on CL. If you are patient some great speakers will come your way at a reasonable price.

Good luck.
