Rega tonearm platter to armboard height

Postby D_Clayman » 09 Aug 2012 10:24

Evening all,

I've decided to bite the bullet and upgrade the tonearm on my rebuilt AR-XB turntable to a Rega tonearm(Probably an RB300 or so). Well, the issue was kind of forced upon me when the original headshell got busted during transport to a new home.

I've scoped out a local plastics guy who can machine an armboard to my specifications, so all good on that front. My question relates to the vertical positioning of the Rega arms with respect to the platter. I've spend a while googling with no concrete answer, other than "around 25-28mm".

Does anyone know the answer off hand? Or does anyone have a turntable fitted with one of the Rega arms that they could take a quick measurement off? I'm essentially after the height difference between the surface of the platter and the surface of the armboard. Either the old style mounting, or the newer 3-point will do.

Many thanks,
JD.

On my Planar 3/RB300 the distance is 25mm to the top of the platter, plus 5mm for the felt mat, but I don't know if the mat is original thickness? The Planar 2 had a glass platter 2mm thinner so the exact distance between the arm mounting surface and the surface for the record varies across different Rega models. It may be better to keep to the low end of the range as you can always use shims to gain more height if required?

Thanks Jas, that gives me the measurements I need to finish the design of the replacement armboard. Sounds like I'll have to use some spacers to get the right height.

I'm eyeing off a used Acos Lustre GST-1 on ebay, which I might opt for in place of a new Rega arm, but I'll have to see what the ideal geometry is for that particular arm.

Many thanks,
JD
