Pioneer PL-L1000 Tonearm

Postby rtaylor » 29 Jul 2012 00:02

Hi,

My first post here.
I just got a Pioneer PL-L1000 from ebay a couple of weeks ago. Everything works.
I have a question about the tonearm and weight. I can get it to set to a tracking force but it seems that there is a part missing I think. When I remove the counterweight and the gauge the whole silver tube that they are attached to comes off also. What's left is a small black plastic shaft that the previous attaches to. Is this correct? It doesn't seem complete to me.

Ideas anyone?

Welcome to VE.... :)

Have you downloaded the owner's manual here:

http://www.vinylengine.com/library/pion ... 1000.shtml

From reading Step 8 "Mounting The Counterweight" it seems that the counterweight is fastened to the "silver tube" by a set screw....which means when you remove the counterweight, you need to unscrew the set screw and pull off the counterweight.

It seems to me that the gauge and the rest of the counterweight support tube remain in place.....at the back end of the tonearm, hence my       .

Examine the black plastic stub for signs of old dried and flaking glue.... :? along with inner section of the silver tube. You just may need to glue / re-affix the gauge and counterweight support tube back onto the plastic stub.

Good luck.

The counterweight is attached to the gauge assembly with a set screw. The gauge assembly in turn screws onto a threaded chromed metal rod that is attached to the plastic shaft on the rear of the tonearm. It appears that the gauge assembly and the threaded chromed metal rod have become stuck together, probably by corrosion. Use some penetrating oil and see if you can get the gauge assembly to unscrew from the threaded rod. The threaded rod is secured to the plastic shaft and should not come off. It's possible that when the gauge assembly got stuck to the threaded rod, that a prior owner tried to remove the dial assembly ( or set the tracking force as that is how it is done by screwing the gauge assembly forward or rearward on the threaded rod ) and broke the anchors that secure the threaded rod to the plastic shaft. Once you get the threaded rod and gauge assembly apart, you can glue the threaded rod onto the plastic shaft so the tracking force adjustment will work properly.
If you use any tools to get the gauge assembly and threaded rod apart make sure to wrap the areas which the tool ( pliers ) will grab in electrical tape to prevent scoring the finish.

A correction to my previous post. Instead of being mounted on a plastic post, the post on which the threaded stub & counterweight assembly sits is actually two parts. A metal tension pin which is surrounded by a rubber tube which acts as a decoupler. I'm not sure if you are removing only the threaded metal stub or both the stub with the decoupler still inside the stub. If you reglue the stub & decoupler make sure you only put glue on the rear of the rubber decoupler where it contacts the rear of the tonearm. Use 3M Plastic & Emblem adhesive to reglue the decoupler to the back of the tonearm pipe fulcrum.
