Where do i get an external belt?

Postby Fishtails » 14 Jun 2012 11:22

Hi

Im going slightly mad trying to,source a belt that i can use with my external motor.

It needs to go around the oitside of the platter and to the motor.

I am after a thin round style belt and dont want to make my own.

Anyone able to point me in the right direction to someone i can buy from online?

Thanks!!!

Hi

The belts intended for the Michell Tecnodec and Gyro/Orbe, or the Pro-ject belts for the RPM 9 (or even the RPM 1.3/Genie) should be readily available as spares. E-bay would be a starting-point; the Michell belts, for example, are widely sold on E-bay in the UK. As for Pro-ject, the Australian distributor is International Dynamics Australasia http://www.internationaldynamics.com.au

These are all round-section belts intended to go round the outside of the platter and then the motor pulley.

Could you us a thread? If the pulley has a groove cut at its center, the thread will ride nicely in it. I use a piece of plain old thread from my wife's sewing basket, and it has worked beautifully for a decade or so. I tried it as an emergency measure since the belt on my Micro had died, but it was such an improvement I didn't bother finding a new belt.

Actually, this is an easy one. Look for an industrial O-ring supplier. Measure with a piece of string, very precisely, and then go anywhere from about 4 - 10mm shorter for the *circumference*. You will find that the material cost for these things is low enough that you might purchase a range of circumferences (size) and diameters (short way) and see which works best with least slippage.

Industrial O-rings may also be purchased in a variety of materials, the most common of which is neoprene. But there are several silicon and silconized materials also available. When you are sure of the correct size you might consider stepping up to the better material for longevity.

I have not purchased a "brand-name" drive belt in nearly 40 years and quite a few turntables since I found this source.

Thanks again!!

Nice. And the great thing is that if you change your mind, you've wasted less than a penny.
