Rega RP3 or modded Technic SL1210

Postby PooBah » 13 Jun 2012 21:45

I'm currently running a Rega RP3 with their TT-PSU and wall mount and love it. This is my main TT.

However, I have 2 technic 1210's in the loft that I want to get back into action for home Djing - they both need their RCA cables replaced. I also want to get at least one of them to a more audiophile standard, for a second listening room.

My current thinking is that I get one of the 1210's fitted with an Origin Live Silver tonearm and keep everything else as is (just replace the RCA on the 2nd Technics).

My other option is that is that I sell the Rega gear and get two OL Silvers, one for each Technics. I then have a decent TT in each room but also have a decent tonearm on each TT for when I want a mix up.

I know that this is subjective - any thoughts on how the Technics with OL Silver will compare to the RP3 setup?

Cheers........

There are cheaper and more effective mods to the Sl-1200 than replacing the tonearm - it's not that bad. What cartridges do you have / intend to use with the Technics?

Only Stanton 500 copies from memory. They're old and need to go.

Would want some ok with reverse play for DJing. Are there any of decent standard, or would I need a Hifi one too?

Probably best to ask this question on the dedicated technics forum but the biggest upgrade you can make at present is a good cartridge - the rest of the mods available will just help this item to perform to it's full potential.

I have to agree, I use a Decca super gold among other carts on my Technics (a grands worth of cart) and the Technics arm manages this difficult cart without a problem. In your position I would get the Technics out of the loft and get the best cart you can afford and fit it onn the standard Technics, THEN if you feel the need start thinking about modding them if you really feel the need. Re the replacement rcas if you want to convert the TT to use any leads ie fit rca sockets let me know and I can explain the best method of doing it. You will need a dremel tool to make a replacement plate for under the arm (inside the turntable), but the rest is relitively easy.
