One suggestion I will submit is a Rolls VP 29 that I bought one of a few years ago for, I think, $60. US. Another idea would be a Shure M64, used, but 2 that I saw on Ebay last night, sellers were asking way too much for those, as I got one a few years ago for $10. US.

I mean, I touched some buttons here and there on the amplifier, just for fun, and everything started to sound messy (distorsion and all, probably caused by dust and such things). I then though that after all, it might be a problem too.

Would you recommand me to buy a new phono pre-amp, and if so, is there any good phono pre-amp under let's say, 120$?

Thanks!

I would say yes, definitely get a new phono equalizer for your nad amp, and do away with the old crappy amp, if that amp is no good, then you'll only be taking a bad sound and amplifying that through your nad. And it sounds like it's a mess, with all that happens when you touch the buttons. By all means. Clean out all the dust from inside the old amp and clean the switches and pots, but then keep it as a spare. And set up your main hi fi properly, you don't have to pay a lot for a phono pre amp equalizer

In fact, I'd do it cheap to find the weak link, over here you can buy a pre amp for about 25 quid, and since your player was a hand-me-down and your amp is good but entry level, you won't need to worry about splitting heirs on prices.
If your player has a new/good condition stylus, and you have a decent amp and speakers, including a new pre amp, then you should be good to go, a final test would be to treat yourself to a brand new record that you know is good sounding and see how that sounds.

I have some old second hand records, (Chris rea's road to hell, dire straits brothers in arms, any pink Floyd's) that sound amazing, they cost me between 50p up to six quid.
Yet, I have paid just short of 20 quid for Ritchie blackmore's rainbow, live in Munich '77, from "back on black".
Brand new 180g and it sounds like garbage. It sounded great on DVD.
Check around the forum for opinions on new vinyl.
And preferably, try a record that you have heard on someone else's set up that sounds ok first, so you get a fair experiment

Thanks for your input.

I bought a new pre-amp (CA 540p), and well, it sounds better now

I've got a new TT too (used), but I get the stylus might be worn a little bit... not that it sounds bad, but it could be better imo.

I guess this problem is solved! Thanks everyone for your help.

my first was a NAD PP2, and was very good. and can b picked up cheap. In fact i have it for sale, but you would need to purchase a walwart transformer to use it on canadian volatage.

Yours for C$65 plus shipping. without the power supply it weighs next to nothing so wont cost a fortune to send.

Let me know.

Dan
