2M Black Ortofon problm

Postby jbongo4545 » 29 Apr 2012 22:14

I have an Technics SL1200 MK5. I purchased an Ortofon 2m Black Cartridge and have set it for an overhang of 15mm as per the manufacturer. I used the manufacturers protractor to align the cartridge with null points of 58.801 and 113.518an offset angle of 22 degrees. I have the VTF at 1.7. I used the HiFi analogue test record to test and set up the cartridge. My problem I can not get past the first 3 bias tests no matter what VTF and anti skate setting I use. My right speaker has a buzz on those tracks unless the bias is set to 3 and then I survive the fist two tracks and struggle with the 3rd. My VTA is set level tone arm, if I set my anti skate at a value of 3 I can get through for the most part. This set up also struggles to get through tracks 1 on side 2. My audio technica AT150MLX passes with no problem. What am I doing wrong? Help please

I would first check if your turntable is level. Platter and chassis.
If you are using the default Technics arm. Go to tools and download the default Bearwald protractor or the special Technics arc protractor. Print and check the measurement points.
Check the recommended tracking force & VTA (headshell parrallel with platter)
As a starting point Use the default antiskating value.

If it is a new cartridge it needs to bed in for at least 50 hours. After that period you can start all your torture tracks.
What is your room temp. If it is too cold/hot you can have strange issues. (Got this problem with a Cadenza Bronze setup in a cold room @16°C)

If you still have tracking/distorsion issues revert to your Ortofon dealer and ask for an exchange.
