What's your worst turntable you owned?

Ok it's time to offend a few people out there. :) .... Well not on purpose!

If your favorite turntable turns up in this thread, then don't take it personally. After all it is all a matter of opinion and just a bit of venting on those machines that drove us crazy or we didn't like for some reason. as the saying goes..one mans trash is another mans treasure!

To get things started , my most disliked turntable I owned was an akai ap-b20 thing that was just plain boring and had a headshell attachment like no other in history so you couldn't swap it for anything. It made me feel like a complete nerd using it. I just plain disliked it. Base was chipboard made to look like metal.

When I was young, BSR (Bad Sound Reproduction Company) was the standard turntable to buy. Worst one eva', assuming you don't count the built-in one on my Lloyds all-in-one.

During my teens (1980's): an all-in-one system whose brand I really can't remember. After that: an Onkyo CP1200A. That thing didn't have a needle but a chisel...

For me the Fidelity UA-7 (again BSR)
My first separate TT was a Garrard Sp-25 mkII with it's Goldring G800 was seriously dull! My Grandad gave me a Pickering V15 which was a massive improvement-then I started to enjoy music.

Okay...get ready...A Linn LP12

I really do mean it, but not in the way one would immediately think. It was actually a great 'table for the most part, but we didn't say worst sounding, just your worst. I qualify this statement by saying it was the biggest pain-in-the-ass to set-up, tweak, upgrade, obsess over and downright enjoy for the very reasons listed before 'enjoy'. Add to it the Linnie philosophy and often one-sidedness (though I rather enjoyed reading about it here and there, and not much else), and it made for a displeasing experience overall. Granted, I'll attribute most of my dissatisfaction to my own personal issues; but I've owned 'tables that were a fraction of Linn's cost that sounded equally as good, and didn't require countless outlandishly expensive upgrades or PSUs to make them sound their equal. This is why I ultimately state that it was my worst TT...

There were a few...A recent L-75 which took me 10 days to turn into something useable. The wholewheat bread plinth material which crumbled when you look at it, and then that start switch directly under the headshell :(

Another one which gave me the vapours was some anonymous Philips belt drive deck - lots of cheap blingy pushbuttons - all bling and no go.

And for good measure, a Rega Planar Mk3 which started like a Massey Ferguson tractor with a bad clutch. The only good thing about it was the cool looks and the Acos Lustre arm which I still have.

Hi,
the worst I ever owned was a Netronics 350F. It was a kit-built direct drive thing which went crazy with speed variations and a non-responsive 2-knob adjustment "capability". It was marketed direct from the manufacturer, with no middlemen. But the mfgr. was TOTALLLY NON-RESPONSIVE.
Oh, it had an effective anti-acoustic-feedback system. THAT was good, but most of the time I was dizzy with the wild speed variations of the platter.

Much much later I found out the wall-wart transformer was inadequate, and I substituted it with an adequate little transformer purchased at a local electronics technical store. That's one advantage of having a local knowledgeable store owner. But then the 350-F died, and I was more than happy to get a used Rega Planar 2. Great improvement  .

Regards,

I had an old, moany, groany BSR MacDonald TT a long time ago, back when I started collecting vinyl. It broke down, and I got rid of it.

Objectively my old BSR equipped Fidelity Music Master was the worst, but it got me hooked on vinyl at 7 years old so I can't really hate it in any way...!
