as no one has mentioned it yet. there is a lot to be said for cleaning records. the difference can be night and day, especially with thos old rock lps filled with nicotine and beer.

Just a thought... you did mention that you have a smaller room. What about adding some acoustic dampening to the room? Carpets on the floor, a thick tapestry (or acoustic panels) on the walls. Thick curtains for the windows... lots of times that will make everything sound a whole lot better.

r.e my missus: i know, i usually spend a tenner here and there and get a few records, but i was complaining that there was no good stuff left in the shop and the guy said he had a few rooms full of records that had'nt even been gone through and he would let me at them one day when the old fellow that owns the shop (grumpy old rip off merchant) was'nt there,
well, he'd dug a few out, i bought a handful, then when payday came a couple of days later i went back and bought the lot and he did me a deal, £38 the lot.
got some neil young, tom petty, santana, floyd, a couple of thin lizzy, a stack of iron maiden, priest, AC/DC, def leppard, sabbath.
if it builds up gradually that's not so bad but if she finds out i've spent that much in one go, the poo will hit the fan, i've got my back-up excuses ready in case,
should be reet though.

with regards to dampening, there is carpet, luckily i have i big clothes rail that i keep a all of our bulky textile and leather bike gear on which helps.

most of these records i have recently bought definately do need a good clean, i'm going to look into that.
