just found this ebay auction: see the litterature: there is a "sliding base "for use with spu and GM cartridges, so there is a different mounting distance with SPUs and other cartridges?

hi,
SPU's are built into a headshell (the cartridge is a headshell) and can not be moved about. so the solution is to move the arm like an SME arm. as simple as that.

yes, I know that SPUs are one piece carts, but as I said, my friend has two Ortofon headshells with fixed different mounting holes; just wondering why!

fixed mounting holes in a changeable 'ortofon' headshell is new to me as far as i remember. stinks of SME compatability here. well, you need a sliding 'sme' type mounting sled, or get a new standard headshell with slits to mount a cartridge with. the different distances from connection to arm point, and the mounting holes could be that the headshells are for 2 different type arms, or to accomidate longer and shorter cartridges optimised for resonance frequency.
would be nice to know the whole story. can you say again (if you haven't already) which arm you are speaking of, and, did the headshells come with the arm when you bought it?

hi,
i'm speaking of a SMG 212 arm I got on a Neat TT -see the pictures in the gallery-

It came without an headshell.

a friend of mine told me he has a couple of ortofon headshells with diferent FIXED holes for cart mounting.

that's all i know and I'm just asking if someone knows anything about !

Hi

Nice arm, and well made sliding base. I would assume the arm will work fine at 212mm with an SPU, but will need to be adjustable for other carts.

As long as you use a headshell with slots for the non-SPU you should be able to get geometry ok. Start with an overhang of 17mm and use a protractor to fine tune.

Heavy headshells are available from the Audio Technica range. I think I would use extra weight in your current headshell for preliminary tests. Fwiw.

Regards

Colin

I have at hand a Orsonic AV 11S and a Nagaoka 12 g headshell, both on the heavy side, BUT, for the vintage consistency, I'd like an original black Ortofon shell.

here is one that might work for you;
http://cgi.ebay.ch/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=48649&item=5783472182&rd=1&ssPageName=WD2V

hadshell i mean.
you could always add some lead sheet between the headshell and cartridge, it will also damped resonances in it.

Hi, Mushi
I placed the wheel in a flat bottom drinking glass and poured some liquid machine washing soap I found handy at home: it was "Xtra- blue power" by Henckel...sorry for spamming...
just the quantity to to overflow the wheel
left overnight

There is a gentleman in the US who can perfectly resurface any idler wheel for a very attractive price. His name is Ed Crockett, and his email address is:
PHONOED@aol.com

He did a beautiful job on a Lenco idler for me. Inside the US his cost is $27 shipped. I am certain the charge would be a bit more for someone who is elsewhere, but it may be worth checking into.
