Postby rbwinterlink » 21 Jan 2011 02:51

Hello again all,

Does anyone know of a company or individual who will refurbish my SME 3009 series 2 improved arm? I would prefer a company loacated in the USA rather than overseas. Thank you for your suggestions and referals. Please provide address, phone, link, etc. Thanks again.

Hi Bob,

If you are willing to stretch to Canada, you might consider

http://www.smetonearms.com/

I spoke with Alfred this week about some parts for a 3009 S2 Imp and he is very knowledgeable and informative. They do rewiring and I think will also do refurbs so it might be worth an email and/or a call.

For reference, SME in the UK pointed me to him so that is not half bad :-)

Hello Chris,

I am more than happy to get this information. Canada is not that far away and it sounds like these people know how to work with SME tone arms. I will give them a call today. Thanks again sir.

I had my SME 3009 Series II refurbished and rewired by Alfred recently. This particular arm was my dads and had sat relatively neglected for over 20 years. Alfred did a tremendous job and he is a blast to talk to. I recommend him very highly. Also, it seems to me that his charge of $250 to rewire the arm with Cardas internal wiring, replace the knife edge bearings, and totally revamp and overhaul the arm replacing any other parts as necessary is a bargain. He talked me into a brass mounting plate which I thought was a bit steep at $100 though it is a thing of beauty.

Refurbishing SME series 2 Improved Tone Arm

Postby rbwinterlink » 21 Jan 2011 18:06

Hello Chris and anyone else interested in getting your SME tone arm taken care of. I called SME Tone Arms (705-737-6773) and spoke with a very fine gentleman (Alfred). We spoke for about 4 minutes as he informed me what my used 35 year old SME 3009 Series 2 arm might require to bring it up to todays tone arms and standards.

He said that my SME would equal any $2000 dollar tone arm on the market today with a rebuild to include a rewire. He asked that I call as soon as I get the tone arm in hand and describe it's condition. He also wants photos prior to shipping the arm off to them. They will contact me with instruction on packaging and shipping the arm after looking over the photos.

Chris, I was very impressed with this contact. Alfred was very knowledgeble about all phases of the SME arms. Thank you so very much for your guidance sir. You've been most helpful. By the way, Alfred and his company will get my business.

Refurbishing SME series 2 Improved Tone Arm

FSonicSmith,

Thank you for your imput and sharing. Indeed i will be sending my tone arm to Alfred and his partners as soon as I get it. Your input gives me more of an incentive to get my SME off to a new life. From what I've read, these were some of the best tone arms made back in the day. although discontinued they still pose a major force guiding a high quality cartridge accross an LP as many of the better arms on the market today. I did a lot of research prior to the purchase of this used arm and am satisfied it can be brought back to a great life. Thanks again for your sharing.

My pleasure -funny story about small worlds etc. I spoke with Alfred this week and as it turns out we went to high school together -small world indeed. In any event, Alfred is very knowledgeable about a wide variety of vintage arms, but was especially aware, as you say, about SME topics. I was vey impressed to say the least - I will only recommend those I trust and Alfred is as good as they come. Keep us posted on the progress. My SME improved is the way as well but I will try the rewire myself as I have done a couple already.
