anyone know td535?

Postby eljorge » 01 Apr 2012 19:00

Hi Guys, I have a Thorens td-535 that someone sold me in good conditions, is this machine any good?, as I'm stuggling to get rid of some distortion i have. It has the original tonearm with an ortophone GT cartridge and stylus.
It cam with a little plastic thingy, which should help me adjust the cartridge, but even with this i still have distortion; I downloaded the S stevenson, Bearwald and the Loefgren protractors, but am unable to understand from reading the instructions as to how they work; for example- why must the cartridge be adjusted in 2 different places, if i alaign the one will the other be off, if not then my question stands; but which of these protractors should i consentrate on using?
I know I must sound like an idiot , but really I am.thanks #-o

Stevenson, Baerwald, and Loefgren alignment protractors use different null points, two each.
To properly align your cartridge with any of these, it is necessary to adjust the distance of the stylus from the pivot point of the arm to the correct setting, and this is different for each.
Also the angle of the cartridge to the headshell will be slightly different for each.
Using 2 points is necessary to do this.

BTW, you have a DJ cartridge and stylus, not a hi-fi one.

Cheers,
Alec

heyah Alec, thanks for that input. I was told that this cartridge and stylus were good; should i invest in a Hi-Fi one? will it improve the sound and any recommendations will be welcomed =D>
What is the distance for each (e.g baerwald 66/120.89,is it the 120.89?), and i was unable to get the distances between the A-A to be exact 180 (close) is this also a problem?
thanks

Heyah Alec, think i manged to sort out the alaignment, slowly started to put things together and think I have now got it; still would like to know about which cartridge might help me improve, did'nt realise there were differences between dj and hi-fi cartridges.

Here is the GT: http://www.ortofon-dj.com/en/products/r ... t-styli/gt
Note the 3 to 5 gram tracking force.
Hi-fi cartridges track in the 1 to 2 gram range, and have elliptical styluses for the most part.
Here are some suggestions:

Oh,yeah! Add to the very good chassis of the TD320 the dynamics of a direct drive and the versatility of three speed and +-15% pitch control. The TP90 tonearm is very good too, but additional headshells are expensive.
I fitted (after some wood working) a Sumiko labeled Jelco tonearm on my TD535 and can“t complain!
Enjoy it!
