TD160 50hz to 60hz

Postby stereophile » 25 Mar 2008 23:33

Hi. A few weeks ago, a friend brought in from the UK a 50hz TD 160 w/ SME3009. It runs fast. In my country, we use 220v 60hz. How do you go about it? Change pulley? Is it easy to do this? Where to get? He is in a stump and needs help.

On another note. There are some Thorens using 16v motors. I read that some members have used a Project speedbox II for this purpose. There is a local Project dealer who sells the speedbox II. Will it be that simple: just hooking up the Project speedbox II to the 16v motor and it will have the correct rpm?

Thanks in advance for your help.

regards,

Lito

Hey Bro! I know that it has been awhile that you post this question but I have to resurrect it again. I have the same problem with my TD160 that I bought in Singapore, I never realized then that Singapore is 50Hz & our country/Phils is 60Hz. Where you able to have your TD160 fixed? If yes, how? Please call me if possible in this number 876-2306. Thanks!

The info you need is at theanalogdept.com here is the link -

FYI - You need to change out the motor pully as well. When I needed to do the same proceedure, I got my motor pully on ebay.

Hi,
On the TD160 with a 110v motor you need a 60Hz pulley for 60Hz power and you have to change the wiring of the motor seen photo

Or you can get a Mose/Hercules power supply on ebay I used the Mose/Hercules on my TD150 and works with50/60Hz power and puts out a 50Hz @ 33 1/3 and 67.5Hz@45rpm sine wave this is a great up grade.

If you have a 16v you can used the Pro-ject SpeedBox II in the USA the speebox must be used with 60Hz 45rpm pulley. In the UK it runs on the 50Hz pulley but 220v 60Hz I don't know you will have ask the Pro-ject dealer

I have the same problem. I have not solved the problem yet but I think this is the solution:

U need a EUROPEAN version of the speedbox II. Speedboxes sold in the US are
also designed to assume they are driving turntables bought in the US and hence
are designed to generate 60Hz at 45rpm. What we need is a speedbox designed
to generate 50Hz at 45rpm, which are the european models.

I have ordered one from Germany and awaiting its arrival. If it works (I hope it does) I will let everyone know.

or you can do what I did; wrap tape around the inner platter ring where the belt goes to increase its diameter. Took about two or three layers IIRC.

I think this will benefit all those who are looking for the effective way & cheapest way to solve this problem with the freqeucy disparity. If you look for frequency converters (from 60hz to 50hz)in the internet these are all costly that amounts to thousands of dollars because these are industrial equipment. What I did is bought a "150W inverter with a 220V 50Hz AC output input of 12VDC" and I also bought a "power supply that provides 12VDC that could be powered from wall outlet of 220/110 VAC 50Hz/60Hz". The TT speed was corrected & I only spent 88USD for all of these.

Hi T,

With this kind of set up, don't you get a hum in the background? And if you do, how were you able to fix it?

I have the same power inverter set up for my Braun SK 61 that I play in the US (which also has 60hz instead of 50hz). It plays at the correct speed but the hum or buzz is persistent. I know it's not my player because the Braun has an internal voltage switch and when modified to 110v and plugged directly, it doesn't have the buzz, but then it plays the records faster than normal (20% faster).
