What kind of Thorens motor is this?

Post by lavallee » 09 Mar 2018 21:07

I bought a Thorens TD 165 for the purpose of restoring it. Unfortunately, the motor that was in it is NOT from a TD 165??

Additionally, there is no 33 microfarad cap, just the smaller one for the switch.

Does anybody know what this is? Here's some photos, including part of the underside with the motor in place, and the entire underside after the motor was removed.

Any ideas?

Not any Thorens motor that I've ever seen. What should be in there is a 16-pole AC motor.

Yes, that IS actually a stock Thorens motor used in the 165 for a limited time. I've only seen two of them in 18 years.

Unfortunately, I don't have one here right now with that configuration to relate to you exactly how it was wired. So, some detective work needed.

Thanks so much for the info. Now the mystery is solved!
Do you know if it's a 16 pole motor like the others?

Also, also, what can be done, if anything, about longitudinal play?

I know you have a bushing support kit for the other motor types.. This one has about 0.4mm long. play..

Likelyer an 8 pole one as the numbers states on the AEG label... but this is mere deduction and not knowing better for fact.

No idea...and no, the support kit won't fit that. In your shoes, I would look for a TD-165 parts unit and steal the more "traditional" motor from that...then part out the rest, for which you will probably recoup most of your funds.

When turning its pulley, I can feel 16 distinct positions that the motor has (magnetically) to make one revolution. I guess that makes it 16 poles (or 8 pair of poles) correct? Does that make sense?

I'm going to try to acquire the more common, standard motor for a td 165. That way I have it covered. It might be interesting to see if one has any benefit over the other when playing an actual record.

It has a Thorens platter and Thorens pulley, so it have to do the right speed. Otehervice its quite silly thing from Lisbeth Thorens ;-)
Hmm, only two wires. This has 4:

I would like to add that the motor shaft is 2.5mm diameter and uses a unique Thorens one piece pulley. The motor has also been found on a TD 166. I am sharing the following that was the effort of Jaap Pees of Hanze Hifi in the Netherlands.
