Suggested arm for a Thorens TD-124 Mark I

Postby Steelyjoe » 01 Aug 2012 17:26

I am resurrecting an newly acuired, dormant Thorens TD-124.
This gem is now equipped with the original tonearm and I believe it to be a BTD12S.
I have a spare tonearm, the Signet XK50 and I am wondering if this Signet arm would yield superior results.
Please let me know and thanks.

Sheesh  that arm is quite sought after, are you sure you do not want to keep it?

I would keep the arm that's on there for now. Once you get the table resurrected and running well, then pick up a second armboard and try the Signet if you still feel the need.

Here are a couple of images, before and in-process.
Please let me know if the arm is a BTD12S.
Thanks.

Certainly looks like one...

What material did you use for the plinth?

I agree with Brain. Give the arm a good go. I have the same arm, fixed on a TD-135, and really love it.
Just play with your TD-124, listen to it, try different music, and what you like and what you don't like.

By the way, EMT used this BTD-12s tone arm for inspiration to make their own arm!

Enjoy your Thorens,

Niels

Thanks for the info.
The plinth is a lamination of 2 layers of 1" thick high density polyethylene (CNC machined).

Thorens TD-124 Mark I skipping

Postby Steelyjoe » 10 Sep 2012 02:23

New development and issue:
I have mounted a Shure V15 VMR cartridge with a new stylus and the cartridge is skipping.
I am using the specified VTF at 1.5 grams and the the deck is level.
The BTDS-12 has no anti-skate.
What can I do to end the skipping please?

Even without anti-skate you shouldn't be experiencing mis-tracking as severe as skipping.

Which stylus did you get? Have you managed to have a look under a loupe to be sure there is no damage to the stylus?

My only other idea is that perhaps the BTDS-12 is a really heavy tonearm and that the stylus is resonating out the groove. What type of music initiates the skipping?

Ed Saunders

Yes and the stylus appears fine

Is the V15 V too light?
What type of music initiates the skipping?
Classic Fleetwood Mac as an example.

Thanks.

Nothing to do with the weight of the cartridge; the V15V is a fairly high compliance cartridge and may not be a good match for your high mass arm.

There is no mass for your arm in the data base but if you can find it elsewhere then you could use the resonance evaluator to determine if you have a resonance problem.

Problem solved:
After speaking with Ed Saunders, I moved the cartridge outside of the recommended point.
The cartridge and the turntable system sounds wonderful.
