Thorens TD 160

Postby workingman77 » 05 Jun 2012 02:48

Greetings,

This is my first post on this forum so please bear with me if this topic has already been discussed..

I have purchased a Thorens TD160 (in lovely condition) after having one years ago in my teens..
I'm in the process of hot rodding it, pairing it with a Denon DL110..

When i put my ear to the plinth i can hear a constant mmmmmmm sound that i don't recall my last one having & it seems to be coming from the motor...I can only assume some of this destructive noise is making it's way to the platter?..Not getting the knocking sound others talk about...

What to do?..mmmmmmmm..

Very cool Alec!

Thank you, plenty of info to work with there..

As for headshell spacers, what do you think is the best material to use?
I can't get the cue low enough to clear the arm & get the arm parallel to the platter..
I was thinking cork 'cause it's lightweight & has damping properties, or should i go with plastic?

Cork is too elastic. Plastic is the common spacer material. Brass is heavy.

Thank you once again Alec,

Will be looking to make one this weekend if i can find appropriate thickness..My 12mm MDF board was cut today for the bottom of the plinth & am looking at some Focal damping material tomorrow..

Platter is polished & suspension tuned, i'm on my way!..

Will post a pic if your interested..

I use small lightweight aluminum bolt nuts for spacers. They only weigh .5 grams for both. Get them at your hardware store.
