According to Panasonic Parts in the USA, all SL-1200 MK II parts are still listed as available.

From the KAB web site dated March 18:

"Technics January Production. Just wanted to report that I have received inventory now with date codes for January 2010. This would seem to be a good sign. "

I just read some articles with recent dates that say production of the Technics 1200 stopped in February 2010. Other references say only certain models have been dropped.

I'll buy a spare if they are no longer made.

What's the real deal?

The real deal is that it is already August, and unless the articles you read are refering to nex year, it is timeproven that the story is only just a story.....
However I believe that production of one or few of the later models have been stopped, the MKII is still there.....

And why buy a spare one, the table will last a lifetime in HiFi homes, and for investment it will be a very long time before it bring you anything....
On the other side, the table is so cheap that you can't loose either...

Not sure what it is about the 1200. I have certainly owned and still own a number of far more expensive tables. But the last 12 months of 1200 ownership has me re-evaluating my hifi priorities and actually listening to more music than ever before. I love mine and could not imagine being without it. It is definitely my desert island table.

A spare 1200 would not go unused in my house. I got my kid a new Rega P1, but he can hear that the 1200 absolutely smokes it.

I've read somewhere that it's the SL-1210 black model that is being discontinued.
