Technics SL-7 Rope

Post by johnrainbow » 17 Jan 2020 22:00

Hi there.

Having an absolute nightmare with my sl-7 see my last posts in technics sl-7 disassembly. Cleaned it all up and lubed it back up. However I was too heavy handed cleaning the rope/lope and it's snapped mid record. It was so tight I thought it was metal wire. Anyone know where I could get a similar rope in the UK?

Not in UK but listed on ebay.co.uk -

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Technics-SL- ... 1825734511

1 week shipping from Portugal and cheap as chips so worth a punt if nothing local comes up.

Found the beading cord @ a US arts, crafts and hobby store.

Good luck

I replaced the o ring belt with one off that ebay seller. What I'm after is the rope that attaches just above the guide rail. I've kept the spring and metal end off the old rope well they still attached. They don't look like they are going to come off easy or go onto another rope.

Does anyone have a spare rope or can make me one would pay obviously. I'm not very good at these types of things if you couldn't guess. Just want my sl-7 back it's an awesome deck.

Use the old tonearm drive rope to measure out the correct length of new bead cording. Follow the directions in the service manual for routing and replacement.

Good luck

Fred thanks for that I've found some cord. Do you know what the two metal ends are called are they crimped on any pictures for ideas?

Steps for drive belt replacement from the service manual:

Stringing diagram:

Use the old string as a guide, good luck

Came across another illustration showing termination of the drive rope, the diagram is from a Sony tangential service manual so the length shown will / does not apply to the SL - 7:
48264

One end in anchored, the attachment of the string on the end of the spring is used to tighten up any slack in the line.

Learning fishing knots is fun, hope you get this sorted.

No wasn't successful. :x The metal part that sits on the end of the rope that then attaches to tone arm is an absolute b****r to get off. Managed to get it off but it's too loose now to put on new rope and secure it. It looks like there was some wax and or glue securing the rope to that metal part and the spring.

Contacted technics and they put me in touch with local service centre they put in the part number and it was recognised but it was discontinued. Still had the old price 86 pence.

Somebody should go in business and make these ropes they would make a killing.

Anyway in the meantime I picked up a mint sl-ql1 off ebay really good condition really happy so will use that in the meantime until I work out a solution. The rope model number on the sl-ql1 seems to be the same as the sl-7.
