VPI SDS Question

Postby Ramarge3653 » 16 Mar 2012 15:13

Hi,

Did the VPI section get removed? I didn't see it listed anymore, however I do have a question about my new SDS.

It's my first day using my VPI SDS and I noticed after the 115V ramp up that my 33 constant setting is 84 and my 45 constant setting is 115. These sounded high, so I changed the constant voltage to 72 for 33rpm and 90 for 45rpm.

I am using this on a VPI Scoutmaster with the regular platter, so I didn't see the need for the higher voltage. I was reading the manual and the factory default should have been 72 and 90, but as I already listed it was set at 84 and 115, strange huh?

Any inputs on why this was set so high from the factory and if I did the right thing by lowering the voltages?

Thanks in advance.

If the platter speed is adjusted and stable, you should be fine. My SDS ramps down to 72 and 102 volts for 33 and 45 rpm, respectively.

Hi,

I was disappointed also when the VPI forum was removed. Anyway thats water under the bridge. When I got my SDS it was factory set at 84v for 33 and 102v for 45 rpm. I calibrated it down to 72v indeed the motor runs cooler, but when I acquired the periphery ring and center weight it sounds more ope n, dynamic and increase speed stability when set at 84 v for 33 rpm. For 45 rpm I maintained the 102v default setting.

Thanks for the reply.

I also added the gingko cloud 11 ( I think it is the 11) and that platform seriously made my system sound so much better. The bass is deeper and more defined, it's such a crazy idea that something like a platform could drastically improve my system, but it really has. If you get the chance pick one up as it's relatively cheap and will without a doubt improve your system.

I'm not surprised. The Ginko is something I've got my eye on for future upgrades. The VPI external motors, despite the physical separation, are prone to transmit much more noise than we'd like to admit. When new, my Aries 3 was a bit of a shock when I started with it. It's quietened down a lot since, partly because I keep the motor on a Sorbothane mat. The idea of the Ginko, SDS & single-motor flywheel is very appealing, purely as a strategy towards killing off any residual noises still present. The Cloud 12A has separate isolation platforms for the Aries and its motor so they know something is going on there.

Not directly related to this thread, but does anyone have pics of the Gingko Cloud with your VPI table? Curious to see how they look together. Don't see a lot of pics on the Gingko website. Thanks.

Apologies for responding to off topic post.
I also looked at various isolation platforms for my classic. I did a Mapleshade 4" plank with the pads. About the same price but, IMO aesthetics greatly improved. Also have brass footers on table. Sonics, being quite subjective, didn't suffer or decrease.
