Marantzx 6100 skipping issue

Postby cornhuskerclay » 12 Jun 2012 18:25

I have a Marantz 6100 that I have a weird problem with. On some albums about half way through the last track the song will start to skip. If i lift the tonearm and skip ahead just a little the record finishes out fine and auto return works. I originally thought that some of my albums were just really scratched up but the only time it ever really does this is midway through the last track and only does it on some lps. Not sure if this could be anti-skate adjustment or not. I have anti-skate set as low as it will go right now, but the problem happens periodically no matter where i have it set. really frustrating and not sure why this will only happen sometimes. Anyone with any ideas I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!!!

Hi
Do you notice the sound becoming distorted too?

You may need to adjust the cartridge alignment.

Also does it only happen on albums that have a small gap at the end between the last song and label?

If that is the case it may be an auto return issue.

Just a thought.

Yo cornhuskerclay:

This sounds as if your automatic trip mechanism is hanging up, since it is occurring as the trip mechanism starts to engage.

Lift the turntable off the unit and take the arm and move it slowly toward the center of the record. Observe the trip mechanism as the arm moves toward center. You will see if there is any interference with motion of arm. The interference usually occurs near the center of turntable where the trip mechanism engages with the gear that drives the change cycle. Sometimes lubricant gets sticky or there is other mechanical interference.

I am not directly familiar with Marantz 6200, but I have a general familiarity with other automatic and semiautomatic units. A real Marantz guru might be able to point out your specific problem. You should move the arm VERY SLOWLY by hand toward center and observe the mechanism as arm moves. Everything should move VERY easily, and there should be no interference at all. If you can feel any interference with motion of arm, this will identify your problem.

And good luck from that interfering old guy,

Joe Z.
