marantz 6050 turntable

could someone tell me what the function is of the small paperclip like item that is installed at the end of the arm of my turntable. Mine looks like bent.
are there pictures available of how it should stand??? Does it have a function and if yes how does it work?
my disks keep turning when they reach the end and sometimes my needles runs over the paper center of the disk. can this be avoided?
