Clamp for Ariston RD 80

the scottish play

Postby manicmanta » 30 May 2010 23:49

The clamp bottom dimension is 22mm DIAx8mm deep and the upper is 37mm DIAx14mm deep, the weight is 60-65gms. I have never had a problem with the record being centred but do use the clamp on every record.
Hope the above is of help, good luck.

Thanks for your help manicmanta. The weight surprises me. Commercially available clamps would have been too heavy, and probably would not have fitted properly.

Couple of things, vinyl does seem to vary in thickness but the clamp has always worked. I don't think the weight of this clamp is much importance as it screws down and lastly if the weight was heavy I think it could upset the suspension as it seems pretty soft to start with.

Regards to does the clamp make a differnce, I think it does. The sound seem more dfined and less muddy also it seems to extend further down. This is based on playing albums by Cat Stevens, Fleetwood Mac, Led Zepplin, Cream and various classical pieces.
My RD80sl is fitted with a Linn Basik LVV, Osawa headshell and a Cambridge P77 cartridge playing through a Marantz SR4000L and a pair Celestion Ditton 44's. This set up I know is neither high tech or cutting edge but was all bought new years ago.
Does anyone know what the 'sl' stands for (someone told me it stood for 'stupid linn')

No idea what the 'SL' is for. I also have an Ariston RD110SL

These decks were designed when the Ford Cortina was around and I have always supposed that in common with cars of the era (models had L, GL, SL, GXL etc as insignia) the SL was to stand for 'Super lux' or some such.

Even some cameras of the era joined in the madness, you can even get a 'GT' Yashica!, only available in 'racing black'.

Back to reality, manicmanta, do you use the standard Ariston rubber mat. the ones that I have are over 4mm thick, which does not leave much, plain unthreaded spindle for the record to centre on.

Alan.

I agree manicmanta the clamp does make a difference. A subtle yet significant improvement in clarity and depth.
