Ariston RD40 stylus

Postby tremendo » 20 Aug 2004 14:48

Hi there,

I've decided to revive my parent's old turntable, but the stylus (or cartridge?) isn't present. I can't find any information on it anywhere-can someone please point me in the right direction as to what type of needle I need? I'm not looking to spend a fortune, but I really do want to get it working.

Thanks!

The Ariston's were very nice units indeed! My bias may be showing here as I am listening to a lovely recording of Antonio Bribiesca playing on my RD80sl.

Any good quality cartridge should do well in your RD40.

I would suggest that you avoid Grado carts because they are usually not a good match with Ariston TTs. The Grados are magnificent and generally superior to anything approaching their price but unfortunately they can be overly sensitive to motor hum.

I had a Grado GT in my RD80sl but swapped it for a Shure V15 III and the hum problem disappeared.

I long used a Grado on an RD-40 in an SME III arm -- no hum.
