will someone explain to me why so many records you buy now have "saw marks" on the edge or sometimes a corner sawed off? What the he!! is that all about or is it much to do about nothing?!? I'm quite sure theres a reason but I dont know what it is. I've been buying vinyl since 1977 and I don't have any saw marks on my old stuff. |

You've never come across them before?
I believe they're called cutouts.....permanently marked / scored so they can't be returned to the music distributor for credit.
This is also done on CDs.
In the old days, these LPs used to go for $1.99-$2.99. I've got several in the collection, they also used to drill through the center label too...

| Yes, I've come across them a lot, I guess that I got at least 75 LP's with this I just didn't know the purpose of it so I figure that I would ask my extended family for the answer. When I buy/have bought vinyl off of the rack (FlipSide, Apple Records, etc..) they are perfect. When they come via mail they sometimes have this cutout/cutoff. So they can't be returned to the music distributor for credit? I'm guessing that you mean the "store" bought a gang of records from the distributor or out of print? |

Sometimes you will see a hole drilled/punched in the corner of the cover too. Remaindered/overstocked items. Once "defaced" the company no longer had to pay the same royalties to the artist.
In the 1970s there was a local record store that had a couple aisles of "cut out" bins with albums for $1.99. I bought quite a number in the day. Oh for a time machine! _________________ Kevin R-M

As the whole music industry is kind of convoluted these days, music cycles and "stale / expired product", I was just wondering.....
Are the vinyl off the rack you refer to new? No more than 1 year old? since issue? And the cutouts from the mail order companies, how old are they?
Yes, once cut out they cannot be returned to the distributor for credit, as future orders (new releases and qty) would depend on these credits of units unsold / returned.
So yes, these cutouts that you receive by mail are closeouts / overstock that the mail order co. has taken a chance on, bought at a good price and sold at ???. The cutout cycle may have been 2-5 years out? IIRC in the old days, so, if you could remember well reviewed LPs of music / artists you liked and saw them in the cut out bins, $1.99 wasn't too much to discover another title.
Fred and wondering what the cycle from new release to cutout is these days.... like some movies going direct to DVD..... _________________ Music is Everything....Except Predictable....WFUV Fan. |

Hi,
thanks for this thread, it has explained things. Back in the 70's a local record shop had a couple of bins full of these, and they were simply passed off as 'imports', in truth a lot of them were. Some were from the USA but many were from around Europe, Italy,Greece,Spain etc. They were cheap, but often the pressings were not of a very high standard, so only worth a gamble for something a bit different or unusual.
I wonder though, why they were not simply sold off in the country of origin. Also the English pressings could quite often still be found in the racks at the 'normal' price?

Shops around Nottingham sold them in the 80's and 90's as imports too, often at inflated prices. I remember being told by one helpful assistant that the cut was made by customs to show that duty had been paid and this partly explained the exorbitant price

Hi,
no, ours were definitely 'cheap' between £1 - £2 or so, so about half the usual price. I remember wanting the first two Roxy albums and the assistant offering the 'imports', a bit wary, but, cheaper and the import LP had Virginia Plain on it, the UK release did not, so took them. Got home.... BAD!!!, the second album was just scratchy and the first had no treble, like switching dolby on, on a non dolby tape.
Back to the shop we go, explain the problem to the assistant and asked if I could swap them for the UK pressings and pay the difference, he fetched the manager, never the happiest of bunnies, much muttering/grumbling/moaning ensued about how this cost him money, lost him money and so on. I didn't really see how as I was still buying 2 (more expensive) LP's. and he'd probably put the two I'd just returned straight back in the rack. A reluctant exchange of albums followed.
I think they got these 'imports' for a song ( sorry!) and even at the low prices, they were a nice little earner. The shops in Nottingham must have been raking it in!

I'm sat looking at my 'sawn' copy of the Screaming Blue Messiahs 'Gun Shy' thinking the same. The funny thing is it's my least favourite SBM album so the fact it didn't sell well and was dumped overseas kinda makes sense

Hi,
Gosh, now there's a name I've not heard in a while JaS, the Screaming Blue Messiahs! Blimey.
It's one of the things I like about VE, people will mention an artist or band and suddenly all the memories come flooding back, (well for those of us with a few more years under our belt, anyway)
Sometimes I just look at all the vinyl (and cd's sshhh!) and think about how much I've spent, (less than some!) but only for a second or two. What price art, hey!?
