| I'm in the market for a Linn Axis. Wondering around different stores and e-stores, I noticed that some models have the switch on the outer wooden case, and some have the switch on the platter board. Now, I know that there is an early and a late model, but which of the two is the later one, and what more differences are there between these models? Does the later one also have less troubles with the power supply? |

My primary advice would be go for a later version armed with an Akito in lieu of the original Basik Plus.
In my opinion this is a notably better arm and well worth any nominal extra they now demand second hand.
Here's a little snippet that may be of interest
Hi-Fi World Linn Axis
I personally did not have any issues with the in built power supply with my early Axis, it does get surprisingly warm though.
Cheers

| If you are considering a 2nd hand Linn Axis and the PSU is still OK... I think you are reasonably safe. Since this is a $300-500 product with plenty of competition out there in this price range I would call into question paying the amount one paid for the budget turntable again for an aftermarket PSU. By the time you are done you are looking at a total investment that could have been spent on an LP12, also used, for example, where you will realize greater return on your investment. |

Some early generation Akito arms had bad bearings (like mine).
Axis is a great table. |

| Linn is such an incredible company but for a firm that made its name in tables, I am surprised they never brought out a more modern design for a top flight deck above the LP12. Nor do I understand why they killed off their wonderful Axis or Basik tables. Basik was a Rega style unit that was great sounding and dirt cheap (for a Linn). I also really liked their budget K5 cartridge which they replaced with one that costs 3 times as much. |

| I'm guessing it was a business decision to drop the Axis, K5, et al and abandon the budget table market which had by then become a bit crowded and more price competitive than it was in the '80s? |

Think also that Akito is a great and good-looking deck. No. Just press button and play.
Why did they discontinue Axis? It was more advanced than the LP12 at the time and probably expensive in production. Better profit with the LP12. |

Thank you all.
I guess it does not make any difference whether I buy an early or a late model, concerning the table itself. I noticed that many offers are without a tonearm anyway. I have a rb300 which I will install. And as for the PSU, I take it that all models have the same supply, and that they all need some maintenance after some years.
Maybe someone can elaborate more on the differences between the models, (except the tonearm) if there are any.

Changes according to the schematics:
20/6/86: D15 and R59 (don't know what)
17/7/86: C21 added
5/1/87: R60, 61,62,63,64,65
25/4/88: Varistors V1, V2 added, R1 deleted
The Mk1 model was released 1986? and Mk2 1989. I guess the varistors are the ones modified for the 1989 model, but I am not sure.
The Rega arm will not fit unless there a new hole drilled (the Rega arm is of another dimension than the Linn standard. There are other arms that fit though - 229 mm long arms etc). |
