looking for some good bargain powered monitors to use with my latopop/soundcard... who can recommend something good.

or maybe i'll get a budget integrated amp like the sansui recommended in another post and some regular speakers. i saw some wharfedale's here for cheap.

my room is pretty small so i don't need super loud, just accurate and tasty. i've never had a sub before so maybe i will even get into one of those as well. on the subject of subs, stupid question but how do you get the levels matched accurately with a powered sub if you have different volume controls on the different amps?

Do you want them Plasma or LCD? Widescreen or 4:3?

Powered monitors (studio monitors) are usually expensive... But the smallest ones you can get should be the cheapest on the same line.

Unfortunately I haven't heard some "bargain priced" ones, though you may want to have a look at these brands: Tannoy, Dynaudio and ATC. Some of my friends are prof musicians and have them at home with a laptop and gear they use to high-quality home-brew records.

You could be lucky and found some at a reasonable price Laughing

Regards,

Active monitors aren't cheap if you're looking for the best. However, there are some reasonable ones about which would do Laptop connections or for Ipod/MP3 just fine, and for very little:

Check these out:

There are many similar ones on the Bay.

I've got a set of Alesis Monitor 1 Actives which I used in a home studio hooked up to my desktop computer/soundcard and they sound ok.
You can generally pick them up on eBay for somewhere north of £100/€130, though the active models don't come up that often.

Hi,
although these are discontinued, and are from Canada, you may find a used pair. They offer very high performance, and their inner amplification is 150 Watts for woofer, and 50 watts for tweeter.

They are the Paradigm "Reference Active/20". You may read one excellent technical review at http://stereophile.com/standloudspeakers/597/

These are the speakers I use in my small listening room, and are my favorite speakers.

Good luck,
bauzace50

Tannoy and Dynaudios are excellent for discriminating applications. The Paradigms mentioned are also good. I love the Dynaudio speakers very well.

On my computer, I use a Cambridge Soundworks powered subwoofer I got cheap without their other speakers. I have a couple of small pairs of decent speakers plugged in to them, and am satisfied (RS Minimus-7, Yamaha NX-M5, Koss M-80 Plus.) The sub-bass has its own control, to balance it with the other speakers.
This sounds great on my computer, but obviously won't challenge my big systems.

Cheers,
Alec

to small powered speakers. the top of the list is dynaudio, wharfedale diamond pro 8.2, microlab, maybe blue sky.

how much difference is there between a 5" woofer and a 6.5

anyone heard the microlab powered speakers?

dynaudio may be out of my price range.

I'd suggest to add the ADAM A7 to your list of candidates.

Well, and 13 cm woofers typically are more noticably limited in bass depth and volume (although better powered monitors nowadays are usually bi-amped and have active crossovers, so that lack can be compesated quite a bit better with passive designs) compared to 17 cm woofers. On the other, hand small designs often deliver better imaging, when the distance to the listener is pretty close - but if you've got more than 2 m between you and the speakers, I'd rather suggest to go for a model with 17 cm woofers...

Greetings from Munich!

i heard the wharfedale 9.1, kef, dali concept 1, and mordaunt short 902

kef was too bright
dali was nice but not as nice as the
mordaunt short which sounded the most balanced with just a hint of too much sheen on top
the wharfedale sounded very muffled. i was very surprised.

any actives that come close to the MS?

maybe ill just suck it up and get an amp and go for the MS
