Fred, I find most 70's and 80's metal albums are not exactly 'hi-fi' - more like 'let's make this sound f@cking loud and impressive'. There's nearly always something in the mix that I don't like. I dug out a few LP's last night that I thought had pretty good sound:
Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
Queensryche - Rage for Order
Most AC/DC albums sound good, as does Metallica's Black Album.
All my Opeth is on CD, but they're all good quality.

Best recording.....Robert Cray 12inch single "Smoking Gun". Mercury, I think. Awesome!
Very close to that would be the Rolling Stones Big Hits (High Tide and Green Grass) in Mono. Decca Records (US), London (UK). Stand back from the speakers or get blown away.
Or Neil Young's recent release Live At Massey Hall 1971, Reprise Records.
I'll stop there. I have too many potential great recordings. |

Chinese Classical Music recorded by John Leavy
Must be rare - I reckon its only Me, the BBC, & the guy's mother who have a copy. |

Alison Krauss and Union Station LIVE MSFL is the second quietest LP I have.
Cat Stevens "Teaser and the Firecat" MSFL is the best. Unbelievable quality recording.
Eva Cassidy"Songbird" is very well done
Clapton's "From The Cradle " is very good too (Duck Records) |

I guess I have to weigh in with my Jethro Tull >> Aqualung -- Classic Records 45 RPM box set on clear vinyl recorded on one side only. The detail that comes out on it is stunning. I love to sit down and listen to it.

I'd love to hear that. Every copy I've ever heard or owned (don't have the MFSL copy) sounds like crap. Even Ian Anderson admitted that he wished they had done a better job with the recording. |

i agree, i have Metallica, Opeth, Sabbath, AC/DC and some early Maiden albums on vinyl, they sound great, but most bands seemed to want "everything louder than everything else"

Interesting. The original is of course a classic for how bad an LP can sound if every mistake possible is made in the recording and pressing process, but the music is grand. I'll have to pick up a copy and listen, love to have a pressing of Aqualung that actual has great sonics as well as great music. |

(c)1982 Pablo Records.
Besides being an excellent performance by three legends, the sound quality is breathtaking!! The highs are perfectly preserved, Freddie's trumpet has total presence in the room!! |
