I was laying in the bath thinking about things as you do and for some reason all the hoo-hah about stem cell research, dna and cloning popped into my mind.
Wouldn't it be good if they could replace lost or rotten teeth with lovely new ones grown by the gums by implanting the right cells.
Any egg-heads got views on this? |

Dreaming about new chompers in the bath, then The problem I see is a lot of pain ahead removing the remains of the originals before sowing some new ones.

Teeth, happily for those who can afford them, are one body part where artificial ones really are an incredibly good (better than real?) substitute. I'm talking the ones with a titanium root that is fused into the jawbone.
I'm hoping the bio-engineers will create other parts for which there is now no possible substitute, (eyes, ears, etc).
If you ever watched "Style by Jury", they smack 'Da Vinci Veneers' into every person they come across - and mostly they LOOK fake. They always make then unnaturally big: Is that supposed to be fashionable - really big teeth??? |

It just struck me that most of us have gums that have a predefined code to grow nice teeth. If they happen to be knocked out playing Rugby, a car crash or erroded through decay. Would it not be possible to implant the original code to tell the gums to grow a nice new tooth in the gap.
This then asks the question, what would Dentists do?

Great idea, just wondering origin / cost of seed stem cells AND how long it would take to re-grow the missing dental work? 1 yr / 2 yrs?
