How many running an Ortofon OM on thier Dual use the weight plate? I am just curious if most leave the 2.5 gram weight plate in, or take it out. I am running an OM series on a CS-5000.
Thanks |

I don't remember a weight plate coming with mine. If it did it's still in the box. So I guess your answer is no I don't use one.

The Ortofon weight plate is set into the top of the cartridge, not separate.
I had an Ortofon on my CS-5000. I tried it with and without the weight, and don't remember any great difference. Possibly it sounded a bit more solid with, so I left it in.
Please let us know which you prefer.
Cheers,

The weight plate is in mine and works well. Guess I really never thought about taking it out. FWIW I have an OM30 _________________ "Extinct and lovin' it" |

| I am running it with the weight plate out, its hard to tell really if there is a difference at all. It is a decent sounding system, maybe not revealing enough, who knows... |

I guess that's my mistake, I'm still running the TM 20 on mine. It came mounted from the factory and all i've had to do is change the stylus. After examination there is no weight plate installed but there is one still in the box.

I have owned my CS 5000 from new, too long ago now to remember the purchase date, but I guess mid 80s. The original OMB 20E cartridge has only just failed by going open circuit on left channel.
Having searched the net for info on suitable replacements I happily found this great site.
Yesterday I decided to replace the cart with a new OM 5E which is complete with a standard 5E stylus; it should arrive early next week. I have some unused styli from the old OMB 20E which I think should fit OK, and will report back on that later.
With regards to the weight, I believe the 2.5gm weight fitted as standard to the new OM series gives a total cart weight of 5gm. This is equivalent to the original weight of the OMB 20E, so I guess the weight should be left in place for best results?
As soon as I have it all set up I will report back. |

Lini said something about Dual being criticized for there tonearm and cartridge matchup. Was that the omb 5e he was talking about. I bought mine in 90 and it came with a tm 20, I bought a half dozen styli at the same time and I am on the last one. I don't claim to be an audiophile, but what original cartridge is best for this table?
I don't think my tm 20 has a weight. Is that the only difference to the super om 20? I recently installed a super om 10 on my brothers table and he's happy with it. Is it better than my tm 20? Thanks.

Hello Ron
My choice was driven by budget constraints:
I read the very informed comments linked below, which caused me to think long and hard, but in the end reality won the argument... I have no spare cash at the moment
Here are 2 links to lini's very detailed responses:
Last post on this page and 2 of the last 3 posts archived here.
As soon as my replacement cart is set up I'll post back with comments

BB12, if you still have OM20 styluses, buying the OM5E is the logical answer. When you run out of 20s, you can put the 5E back on and sell it.

| I have only had Ortofon cartridges on my dual CS-5000, that is what the dealer steered me towards, but when the stylus wears out ( OM 40 expensive! ) I may try something else less expensive. |

Alec,
Thanks for the positive comments on my choice of cartridge. It's reassuring to hear it from an experienced vinyl addict.
My system has never grown much beyond what I guess is good "entry level". This is probably due to spending too much money on pianos and guitars in the past.
When my spare OM20 styli are worn out the financial position may be improved, if not I'll have to follow Dadimo's example.

That sentence does not make any sense...
For a musician, an instrument should be a love affair, not just a tool.

Happy to report the replacement OM 5E cart arrived today despite the UK postal strikes.
Initial setup with the 2.5g weight in place was no problem and results are excellent with a spare OMB 20E stylus in place of the OM 5E one supplied.
Have tried a variety of material from Karajan's Beethoven Symphonies and Liszt Hungarian Rhapsodies through to Mark Knopfler's atmospheric The Long Road. Paco Peña's Flamenco, several John Williams and Julian Bream tracks. Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald and Peggy Lee.
I will try mounting a spare DN 167 stylus later to listen to some of my old 78 collection: Barrelhouse and Boogie piano etc...
Will try with the weight removed later in the week.

Very true Alec.
I guess my comment just reflects some self-criticism and frustration. I used to believe hard work, dedication and a first class instrument could overcome the difficulties...
