|
|
|
Hello all,
I am new to these shores - hoping to give my turntable a new lease of life.
It is a Source - bought new from The Music Room in Glasgow in 1986. I have had to fit a new motor (Origin Live) as the original gave up on me a few years ago. I have a Mission 774 arm and original Garrott P-77 cartridge.
The arm will be rewired (by J7 !) but will think about replacing it in the new year perhaps. Looking for recommendations in the £350-500 range. Short list so far is Hadcock unipivot, Jelco SA-750D or L and finally a Rega RB700.
Your thoughts please ! |

| My vote would be for a Zeta if you can find one. |

Let J7 re-wire the 774 as you plan, have the arm tube mass increased and a new J7 counterweight and the 774 becomes a different arm.
He did exactly that for me recently and I just can't say what an improvement it made.

Otherwise if you can ever find one The Odyssey. Were not the Source and the Odyssey made by the same people and supposed to be a match made in heaven? _________________ A sure cure for seasickness is to sit under a tree |

| j7 is himself a Source owner so his opinion carries considerable weight. However if it were me, I'd be looking for an Alphason Xenon at that price point. There are a few Alphason/Source combos out there. |

Thanks for the replies so far guys - interesting mods to your 774 satanfriendly !
Current favorite of the week is a Roksan Nima. The suspension on The Source is quite firm so shouldn't be a problem. The reviews I am reading about unipivots tell me that the characteristics they have match what I am looking for - big wide and deep sounstage - good imaging with punchy dynamic bass. I think the only downside I have read about them is that they lack something at both extremes. Unipivot owners tell me about your experiences with your tonearms !
A rummage on the net a week or so ago brought out an Oddessey arm in the US for $950 - tempting.......
Will look into the Alphasons too. |
