Firstly, thanks for the tips on downloading the Dual 701 service manual.
The manual has helped me find the reason my tonarm will not travel 'to and away' from the record.
For those familair with the 701 and have the service manual, on page 18 there is Fig.21 that illustrates a 'control stud' part no. 167.
On my table this is missing and I assume this is the reason my tone arm will only raise up and down and will not travel horisontally.
As I have little chance of obtaining a new part I would like to attempt to make one. Question is, what is it made of and what are the basic dimensions?
It appears to work on friction from what I can tell, so maybe made of rubber?
Anyone else been down this road? Any help appreciated.
Kind regards,

The infamous *steurer pimpel* failure strikes again...
I found a clean end of a suitably sized ball point pen refill worked a treat for me once trimmed to size... Once done, it has worked reliably for the last seven years or so.
Good old deck the 701. have a think about replacing the exit audio cables with modern ones - I used Van damme pro-patch mic cable, connecting the return conductor and screen together at the phono plug and just the signal and return at the deck, using some heat-shrink to make a neat job. The deck is earthed via a separate wire to the amp (Dual used to connect to one of the returns as I remember).
Instead of replacing the mat, I found that the soft insert from a pack of CDR's stuck (with a Pritt-stick) around the spindle helps record support no end and I'm sure it sounded better for it... |

I had the same problem. A piece of plastic isolation works perfect. Thanks.
