triple mu metal shielding ..wow

The -7 indicates a .7 mm conical diamond stylus..this picture also shows the unusual copper stylus protector.

Variable reluctance cartridges have a very different cantilever from todays MM and MC cartridges.

ORTHONETIC ?...a made up marketing word ?

This shot shows the MU shielding on the top of the cartridge is grounded to one of the pins

Push-in user-replaceable assembly. The thin twisted metal stylus bar is damped underneath by one or two tiny elastomer blocks which do not deteriorate significantly with time, unlike the rubber or latex used by most other companies of the day

The VRII is mounted in a Gray Research 108. Gold coloured metalwork on a GE cartridge signified it was a "Golden Treasure", which simply meant it was originally fitted with a 1mil diamond tip instead of the usual sapphire whole needle. GE never supplied diamond tipped coarse-groove points.

To cover all three formats at the time (33, 45 and 78) GE produced their cartridges in "triple-play" versions, the change between microgroove and coarse groove styli being made by lightly pressing down and twisting the red knob. This why so many arm heads had a plugged hole in the top above the cartridge mount.

Successor to the RPX (VRI) the VRII tracked at 4 grams instead of the 6 grams of its predecessor (for 78s these pressures were required to be increased by 2 grams). A delightfully alive and immediate sounding cartridge for pre-stereo era microgrooves.

Some variants of the most popular US cartridge of the '50s for both home and studio. A GE RPX mounted in a Gray Research 108 or its Gates equivalent was playing the vast majority needle-drops in both AM and FM radio stations throughout the US and a good many other countries around the World in the Golden Era of popular music.
