Pure silver speaker cables DIY

Last year my favourite cable/interconnect supplier lent me a pair of his dog's b******* pure silver speaker cables for my Quad ESL 989's.

Truly amazing soundstage, clarity, you name a buzz word from a hi-fi magazine - these babies did it!
But at £1500 a pair I couldn't justify the expense.

However whilst trawling Google I found an American site devoted to DIY pure silver speaker cables.

It seems that at the moment direct drive TT’s are not the pariah they used to be during the eighties and nineties when belt drives decks and cottage industry manufacturers were seen as the savoir of all things audio.

It's not just Alcohol and Drugs you will find at nigh clubs:

Garrard 301 taking form

Finally - my 301 is taking on something that resembles a piece of useable equipment.
3 layer plinth - 2 types of particle board, and an experimental sprung sub-suspension.

This setup is actually to determine the effectiveness of the spring system. Close-up here:

I first tried 'compression' type springs, because that was a much simpler arrangement - just set the plinth on 10 or so little coils. That produced TERRIBLE results, almost no isolation in the horizontal plane.

Too many LPs.

The new year begins with a rather large amount of LPs for me. Some are repeated, some have not been played in a long while. The FEW whose condition is less than excellent came from purchases through eBay.
I will organize the collection, and offer some for postage only, and others for attractive prices. Good opportunity for a sampling of classical, opera, concertos, and such. News on this will be posted as they become available.

More Thorens Pics

I thought I'd share a few more pictures of my old Thorens TD125 mk2!

Audibility of Record Warps

Mild LP warps are generally not noticed. The music masks their effects. But sine waves clearly show the effect of the mildest warp. One "test LP" of mine has a very mild warp, which is not noticeable while the announcer is talking. As soon as the sine wave content begins, the effect is noticeable. It's not funny to watch the tonearm bob up and down to the audible "beat" of the sound...or vice-versa.

The Road To Vinyl

Hello,
The rules for blogs in the Vinyl Engine permit almost any theme, but it's good to keep it pertinent to the analog territory.
Some backgroung on my Road To Vinyl: as a boy of age 4 I went into my grandparent's garage, where the car eventually did not fit because of all the unused things now stored there. I had a feast examining a wind-up 78 player, with the needles and megaphone. Couple of years later, we spent cool seasons at our country house, to escape the hot summers downtown.

Once Upon A Time

Listening to records has always been a part of my life. I recall when I was a teenager, over forty years ago, Saturday afternoons were enjoyed with friends and listening to music. Back in that period, the record player was the only high-fidelity source.

As time passed, the tradition continued with regular meetings. They were great times, spending an afternoon with mates, listening to favourite records.
